The 9th edition of UQAM’s Urban Agriculture Summer School will take place from August 14 to 18 in Montreal. It is organized by the Urban Agriculture Lab (AU/LAB) in collaboration with the UQAM Institut des sciences de l’environnement (ISE).

Since 2009, over the years, this urban agriculture training has become a not-to-be-missed Quebec and international rendezvous for the curious, aficionados and experts of urban agriculture: citizens, researchers, students, entrepreneurs and professionals from various fields.

The theme of this year’s event is the reappropriation by city dwellers of space and agriculture, and includes three components: Gardening at home, Gardening collectively, and Growing the City―Urban Farmers. It offers citizens food for thought on ways of rediscovering the pleasures of working the earth and gardening despite the challenges of urbanization.

From theory to practice in urban agriculture

Experts deliver a savvy blend of theoretical courses and practical workshops. Numerous discussions, experience sharing and field trips will allow all participants to put what they have learned about urban agriculture into concrete practice.

The organizers would like participants to develop projects at home and at work, in school settings and in their neighbourhoods and to even undertake business projects.

Two other summer schools in Lyon and Brussels

It should be noted that other urban agriculture classes will soon be getting underway in Europe:

  • On June 15 and 16, Lyon will host France’s 4th Journées nationales de l’agriculture urbaine (French). Other cities (Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse or Paris) are also involved in this national project; http://jnau.fr/jnau-2017/
  • On July 13, 14 and 15, Belgium will play host to its second urban agriculture and sustainable food summer school, l’École d’été de l’agriculture urbaine et alimentation durable (French) at the Université libre de Bruxelles. The theme: “d’où vient ce qui se trouve dans mon assiette ? (Where does what’s on my plate come from?) ”. https://www.facebook.com/pg/ecoledeteagricultureurbainebruxelles/likes/?ref=page_internal

A great way to explore the joy of city gardening and rediscover the pleasure of vegetables!
