Peach and apple consumption in Europe.

02 September 2010

Two surveys have been realized in order to get some information about the frequency of peach and apple consumption at the European level: for apples, 4271 consumers (men and women), from 7 European countries, from 15 to 70 years old, have been interrogated and for peaches, 499 people, from 5 countries, answered the questions about their consumption habits.

The highest level of apple intake is situated in Poland (among the 7 European countries), where more than 55% of respondents declared consuming more than 5 apples per week. On the contrary, Netherlands and Spain have the lowest levels of consumption. As for peaches, the biggest consumers are French people (48% of respondents declared having 3-5 per week) and the smallest ones are German people.

Moreover, for apples as for peaches, it is noticeable that the oldest groups of population (61-70 years old) present a higher frequency of consumption than adult groups (36-60), who have themselves a higher level of consumption than the youngest groups (16-35). Lastly, women consume significantly more apples and peaches than men do. These results confirm the general European tendency of a lower fruit consumption in men and in young people.
